How the hell is Texas A&M #6? They got beat at the buzzer by Texas Tech

And some other notes on a slow, snowy, icy Tuesday

by Mike Zimmer, Bracketologist

I must be interested in this basketball stuff after all. I mean, how many posts is this and it’s not even Valentines Day yet? Tonight however, there were a couple of good hoops games on and one that wasn’t that brought some interest to my eyes and Bracketology study.

Seth Greenberg has turned the Virginia Tech program around and has the Hokies sitting pretty in the ACC

Virginia Tech went into Chapel Hill and beat the North Carolina Tar Heels 81-80 in OT tonight, the second time this season they have beaten UNC. The Heels are arguably the best team in the ACC, but the Hokies under 3rd year head coach Seth Greenberg are proving that they can compete. The Hokies just might be one of those teams come tourney time that you say, “who the hell are they and when did they get good? I thought VaTech was a football school?”. Greenberg who is a regular on the Jim Rome radio program is an interesting cat and seems like a likable dude. He’s made a habit of rebuilding programs and he has helped VaTech rise from the former Big East trash heap. I like good stories in sports and previously outmanned and long forgotten VaTech is a fun team to watch. I’ll be keeping my eye on the Hokies in the coming weeks.

Of rankings and a Big XII battle goes to the wire
I looked at the Top 25 rankings and I want to know how in the hell some of these teams are ranked where they are. I am screaming from the mountain tops that I fear that Ohio State is vatly over-rated. I see them getting better and Greg Oden is really coming along nicely, but the Buckeyes are NOT the #2 team in the land according to some polls. Another team that is a good looking program who plays tough defense and can shoot the ball well, BUT is O-V-E-R Rated? That’d be Texas A&M. How in the hell are they #6? They haven’t been on the basketball radar since the 1940…50…er…NEVER. That shouldn’t mean much on where they are ranked, but still they have no real proof that they belong at #6. They showed some cracks in their armor tonight in losing to Bobby Knight’s Texas Tech club 77-75 at home when the Red Raiders hit a jumper as time expired. Want to talk about a team that I think can do some damage if they find their stroke? That’d be Texas Tech, who is un-ranked by the way.

Tennessee beat Kentucky 89-85 in a good one too. Big Blue is ranked 20-something while Bruce Pearl’s Vols are unranked? Huh? This was a close game, but you compare these teams and I think UT is much better than UK. I was thinking that UK was a bubble team, but with Tennessee unranked, I think that the Wildcats are more than safe.

Car Crash injurs pair
ill
Illinois players Brian Carlwell and Jamar Smith

The Fighting Illini got bad news when a pair of their players were injured in a car accident near Champaign-Urbana, Illinois in bad weather. Guard Jamar Smith was in critical condition and has been upgraded to serious condition as of this writing. The Illini (18-9, 6-6 in conf.) who are struggling a bit this season in a down year for the Big Ten will miss Smith who averages 8-points a game and has started 6-games. Carlwell is a Frosh and plays sparingly.

And finally…
Big B’s new favorite team Florida Gulf Coast University lost to #13 ranked Butler tonight 79-65 in a good showing. I think we all need to keep an eye on this future Atlantic Sun Conference team. If nothing else than their abreviation on any ticker should be FGCU. It’s not in any way inappropriate, but it sure looks funny.
