It’s a crying shame, but that’s the way the world works.  Brew is the world’s worst bookie and while he’d bend over backwards for his BFF room mate and actually fly all the way to Las Vegas to make a wager for him, he was unable to place a 4-game parlay for Big B and I on his established off-shore account.

Thus, our Stone Cold, Lead Pipe, Take the money to the Bank wager will be all about pride in the fact that we “done good”.  After much study, plenty of consideration and a little gut feeling Big B and I constructed the perfect 4-game parlay for this first big Saturday in college football.  If you can still make it to a bookies, tell them to take this one to the bank!!! 

San Jose State at Alabama (-37  1/2).  Take Alabama to cover.

LSU vs. North Carolina (+10).  Blood bath for the SEC team, take LSU to cover.

UConn at Meatchicken (-3).  Are you kidding me?  Take those points, UConn wins.

Rice at Texas (-31).  We were tempted to take the over of 56 on this one with Texas alone.  Take the Longhorns to cover and then some.  For bonus to prove our awesomeness, throw in that OVER.  Why not?

What looked like a rather mundane first week of college football from a distance, reveals some rather good looking match-ups and entertaining games.  Upon arriving and plotting our viewing schedule here at the Florida Garage-Mahal Bunker HQ for the first week of college football, there is a plethora of games to watch and enjoy. 

Big B and I have plotted out a course that includes an entire sheet of the games to view for the entire day.  That includes 7-games between Noon and 3:30pm on the tube, 7-games between 3:30pm and 7pm, 9-games between 7pm and 10pm and 2-late night offerings.  That’s right, we’ll be keeping tabs on no less than 25-games here on 4-TV sets in the Cape Coral, Florida Bunker of Big B’s.

But the best of the day?  The Pick Six?  You knew I wouldn’t go and leave you without a guide to the best games available did you?  Hit the jump and see the best of the best and then some for this first official Saturday of the college football season!!!  DO IT!!!

Purdon’t Boiler Fakers
Notre Shame Fighting Drunken Catholics
Time: 330pm                         TV: NBC                         Line: Notre Dame (-10 1/2)

While I’m not buying the hype on Notre Shame just because Brian Kelly has come to town, I do think that this will be a spring board game for the Fighting Irish to get a whole lot of love and a whole lot more hype.  Purdue’s defense is still a shambles and will continue to be put in bad situations by an offense that Head Coach Danny Hope has now handed the keys over to transfer Robert Marve (formerly of Miami Hurricane fame).  The Boiler Fakers are (1-11) in their last dozen trips into South Bend and haven’t beaten the Irish since 2007.  In fact, they’ve lost 4-of-5 to Notre Dame in games that have mostly been shoot-outs.  With Kelly’s offensive system in place, I don’t think that Purdue will slow them down enough or score enough to beat them.  I do however think it’ll be a close game that winds up with NDU covering in the end.  PREDICTION: Notre Dame 34, Purdue 21.

UConn Huskies
Meatchicken Wolverweenies
Time: 330pm                      TV: ABC                         Line: scUM (-3)

This is the first time these traditionally–once powerful–basketball schools have met.  For UConn Head Coach Randy Edsall, it’s just another testiment to the job he’s done in building the Husky program.  Though they’ll have to start on the road at the big(ger) shit house in Ann Arbor (who is a whore you know), this shouldn’t stop them from potentially getting yet another program stepping stone win.  The Wolverweenies are ripe for yet another upset from a non-traditional football power.  Meatchicken is STILL trying to figure out who their QB is and STILL trying to make their version of the spread offense work.  UConn plays tough defense and has a very veteran team coming back (16).  UConn has won 4-straight road openers and is (7-2) in non-conference away games and has gone into Big Ten country and gotten wins before, albeit that they did it against Indiana.  I’m willing to bet that UConn goes in and not only hangs with Meatchicken, but beats them, adding to Bitch Rod’s agony.  PREDICTION: UConn 22, Meatchicken 15.

Oregon State Beavers
T. C. U. Horned Froggs
At Jerry World in Dallas, TX.  Time: 7pm  TV: ESPN  Line: TCU (-13 1/2)

To tell you the truth, this could be an un-seen college football heavy weight match-up without you even knowing.  I would be willing to bet that both of these teams could meet again in a BCS match-up at season’s end as Oregon State is a dark horse to win the PAC-10 with USC ineligible to win the crown out west and TCU once again getting the shaft as a non-BCS outsider.  The Beavers are grossly being over-looked this season but this game may show how far they have to go.  They must be able to get some production from a young QB and face a fierce defense in a first game which may be a tall order first thing in the season.  But, they do have offensive weapons including Jacquez Rodgers and his brother who are speedy midgets.  TCU is possibly tough enough and talented enough to break their way into the BCS talk once again, perhaps going undefeated in the process.  Veteran QB Andy Dalton leads a talented offense while Cory Grant and that defense take their #1 ranking from last year up against all comers.  I think this could be entertaining early with TCU pulling away late.  PREDICTION: TCU 31, Oregon State 14.

Washington Huskies
B. Y. U. Cougars
Time: 7pm             TV: CBS College Sports Network          Line: BYU (-2)

This one could be a hidden gem that not many get to see because finding CBSCSN and remembering what CBS College Sports Network actually is.  Washington will be vastly improved this year not only because QB Jake Locker is back, but Head Coach Steve Sarkesian has added even more talent to a program that has had a tough time getting out of the shadow of neglect, institutional problems and NCAA violations.  Locker is an NFL caliber talent and his being able to run the offense at UW makes them dangerous.  While I don’t think they’ll be contending for the Pac-10 title, they could be very good and a bowl team this year.  BYU mean while is no slouch though they will have to replace their offensive production from QB and RB.  And, expectations are high in Provo every year too, which is especially going to be an issue with the team bolting the Mountain West and going Independent come next year.  These two teams met in 2008 and UW seemed to have tied the game with only seconds left, except BYU blocked their extra point and the game ended at 28-27.  This could be a huge upset game with UW getting the Cougars season off to a rocky start.  I’ll be willing to bet that UW still has a ways to go though to being take serious.  How about a late FG by the Cougs to win it.  PREDICTION: BYU 31, UW 28.

Cincinnati Bearcats
 Fresno State Bulldogs
Time: 10pm                             TV: ESPN2                            Line: Fresno State (-2  1/2)

Please tell me why everybody is sleeping on UC?  Really, just because Brian Kelly left town doesn’t mean the Bearcats are set to take a dive and not be any good.  I think the biggest loss the Bearcats took from last year was the loss of Mardy Gilyard who is returning kicks for the St. Louis Rams on Sundays in the NFL.  The Bearcats were at times actually better with Zach Collaros at QB over graduated Tony Pike.  I think UC wins the Big East in fact, but first they must survive a West Coast trip out to the Valley to play hungry Fresno State.  The Bulldogs hung with the Bearcats in Cincinnati last year, owning the stats, time of possession but not the score board in a 28-20 loss.  They must replace their running game and have all the pressure on them in this one.  This could be a great game though, with UC’s defense still not being up to snuff with the big boys or…for Fresno State for that matter.  I do like the Bearcats to win the game though, in a close one.  PREDICTION: UC 39, Fresno 32.

Boise State Broncos
Virginia Tech Hokies
Monday, 7pm                        TV: ABC                  Line: VT (+2)

Even Vegas seems to know that this one is potentially an upset.  That’s right, UPSET ALERT!!!  The Boise State Broncos head to the east to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies in what is technically a neutral site at the home of the Washington Redskins Landover, Maryland home.  In other words, it’ll be full of Hokie fans and this is STILL a roadie for the Broncos.  Virginia Tech has weapons too, on both sides of the ball they are talented.  The key is QB Tyrod Taylor and his ability to move the offense.  Meanwhile the Hokies defense must be able to shut down the vaunted Boise State offense which can get up and down the field with their all-world QB Kellen Moore at the controls.  I think the Hokies have a chance at upsetting the Broncos BCS busting potential by taking advantage of the “home field” and special teams, a Frank Beamer specialty.  In fact, I say the game turns on a kick return or blocked kick.  I’m betting it’s the Hokies on the winning end of that one and for the game.  UPSET ALERT!!!  PREDICTION:  V’Tech 2o, Boise State 16.

OTHER GAMES:

Illinois  vs.  Missouri  -12  (Noon, FSN Regional)
The Big Ten conference team (with 12-teams) versus a team jilted by the Big Ten (in a conference with 10-teams in it).  This border war has been dominated by Mizzou in recent years and they are (5-0) in St. Louis where this game will be played again.  Ron Zook’s Illini have a new QB to break in and they will have a tall task in slowing down a talented Mizzou offense.  However, the Tigers have had a less than great off-season and that turmoil may have a negative effect.  Nah.  Mizzou rolls 31-13.

Colorado  vs.  Colorado State  +11  1/2  (2pm, Versus)
This in-state rivalry gets note because the spread is just too high.  While CSU is not a good football team and won’t be again this year, they always play their rivals from Boulder very close, especially in Denver where this game will be played.  In fact, they’re (5-4) against the Buffs there.  Dan Hawkins’ team is set to have yet another long season as they transition out of the Big XII to the Pac-10 where they will be buried even further.  I think CSU upsets their rivals in yet another close game between the two teams.  I like CSU 31-27.

Kentucky  at  Louisville  -3  (3:30pm, ESPN Regional)
Another in-state rivalry battle (the Commonwealth Cup) and yet another silly line to boot.  How is it that Louisville who was awful last year and doesn’t seem to have a whole lot of hope for this year either get a 3-point edge by Vegas?  Because UK hasn’t exactly dominated this rivalry, but trust me, they are an improved SEC team.  I think UK runs over the Ville in a big way and proves that even a bad SEC team can beat an awful Big East team handily.  UK 40, LVille 23.

SMU  at  Texas Tech  -13  1/2  (7pm, FSN Regional)
The absolute lost gem of the day?  Out on the West Texas desert in El Paso where the Texas Tech Red Raiders begin life anew without Mike Leach and launch into the Tommy Tubberville era.  Their first foe?  In-state offensive juggernaut SMU and Head Coach June Jones who can light it up in kind with the Red Raiders.  I think this one has the absolute potential to be a barn burner and a basketball score.  That big spread should mean absolutely nothing either.  I’ll say this one is a game that finds the teams a TD apart and the scoreboard lit up.  I like Tech to defend home field, but barely.  Texas Tech 55, SMU 48.

Alright fine, I’ve gotten behind on my college football previews and the season really kicks off today and I haven’t gotten through all the conferences.  From my previous posts though, no one seems to care that I’ve neglected my duty (he said duty) and has not yet posted any thoughts on said predictions so I’m pretty sure this is just me typing random words and not too many people bothering to note it.  Oh, yeah, I just went there, yeah, I’m crying waaaaaaaahhhh!!!!  Read my web-site waaaaaaaaahhhh!!!

Is it possible?  Could the Bungles right a wrong and get the hardest working man in football back in Cincinnati, un-doing one of the worst decisions in franchise history?  Apparently, T.J., under-used, mis-used and not able to get on track in Seattle, could amazingly be cut by the Seabags as Pete Carroll re-tools the team into a younger, much worse off franchise than he’s inheriting. The team is seriously trying to either trade Houshmandzadeh or will release him by Labor day when rosters must be down to 53 (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/09/03/tj-houshmandzadeh-wont-be-back-with-the-seahawks/)

In the process, the team will be eating a good portion of his salary one way or another, something that you’d think would be to Mikey Boy Brown’s fucking liking, getting a bargain no matter the consequence it might have on the locker room.  While Houshmandzadeh is a guy who is un-apologetically in your face, out-spoken and intense, he is still one of the best receivers in the league.  You don’t go from catching 113-passes and being a staple of the Bungles once vaunted passing game and then suddenly lose the ability to play.

For what it’s worth, the Bungles resident diva and multi-media wunderkind, Ocho Stinko will be lobbying hard for the team to re-sign T.J. (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/09/03/ochocinco-will-be-lobbying-heavy-for-houshmandzadeh/) after they allowed him to walk away in free agency and didn’t receive any compensation for him by NOT franchising him and instead keeping horrible kicker Shane Graham as their “franchise” player in 2008.

If the Bungles have any God damned sense in the world, they’ll snatch up Houshmandzadeh and re-right a wrong that has wrecked their passing game.  In Housh’s absence, the team has never been able to find the right combination of possession receiver, chain mover and secret weapon that T.J. always was.  Do the right fucking thing Mikey Boy Brown, sign T.J.!!!

Jebus Crisp!!!  The NFL today reduced the suspension of the Pissburgh Stillers QB Ben Rapelisburgher.  Of course they did!!! (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Commissioner-reduces-Roethlisberger-s-suspension?urn=nfl-267268).

Why shouldn’t they?  After all, the NFL sucks the Stillers dicks, especially when it comes to the Rooney family and for the sake of ratings.  After hearing that Stillers back-up plan Byron Leftwich tweaked an ankle last night and the team not sold on Dennis Dixon as a real plan at back-up, the prospect of the Stillers having 92-year old Charlie Batch under center and the Steelers struggling for 6-weeks was too unbearable to take for the NFL (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/09/03/report-leftwich-out-2-4-weeks/).

So, the NFL caved and gave Rapey Ben a reduction of his suspension for “good behavior”.  Mostly, because well, he hasn’t raped anyone in like what?  Three or four weeks???  And, after all, he’s shown all sorts of “maturity” in actually NOTbeing a complete douche bag this summer (for what we know).  Naturally, the Stillers brass is very happy about this, and why not?  They can survive, say a (1-3) start and Rapey Ben coming to the rescue (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/09/03/rooney-applauds-roethlisbergers-growth-maturity/).

Fuck you Rapey Ben.  Fuck you NFL.  Yeah, I said it.

• Ohio State and Meatchicken head for different divisions in the Big Tweleven’s alignment, but tradition will rule, teams to meet in last week of the regular season…
• So, in other words, in about a decade when Meatchicken is worth a damn again and the damage done by Dick Rod is finally un-done, there is a chance the two teams could meet twice in a season…
• There is basically no rhyme or reason for the football alignment of divisions, this begs the question of whether other sports will be different (such as basketball where Michigan State looks to have an easy romp every year).

With all the speculation, all the hemming and hawing over, the debates hushed and the dust settling from the Big Tweleven’s decision to align their teams into divisions with the addition of Nebraska to the conference, it doesn’t sound so bad after all.  Except that it is.

Still, this stinks, no matter what.  The thought of not having Ohio State-Meatchicken in the final week of the season was repugnant.  The thought of the two separated and possibly meeting up twice in a year also stinks.  I’m sorry, but as a Buckeyes, I don’t think you should have to beat Meatchicken twice in a season in football under and circumstances.  But now, the potential exists and that sucks.

Worse, the divisions don’t make much sense with Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois and Purdue in one division while Meatchicken, Minnesota, Northwestern, Michigan State, Iowa and new member Nebraska go to the other (http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=ap-bigten-divisions).

While the important tradition of keeping Ohio State-Michigan alive and on the same weekend at the end of the season was accomplished, they pretty much screwed up the rest of it.  Sure, there is a possibility that the two teams could play back-to-back contests against one another if Meatchicken ever gets back on track from the damage that Bitch Rod has done to them.  So, come 2019, the Buckeyes could beat the Wolverweenies in their final regular season game and then have to turn around the two weeks later and have to play them in Indianapolis for the Big Tweleven title.

But the scramble makes no sense with Wisconsin coming “East” and the Michigans heading “West”.  How dumb?

Worse, if this is the line-up for all sports, well, that might be a serious problem for the Buckeye hoopsters.  If you notice, Michigan State would have an easy as pie path in that line-up while the power of the conference is weighted severely to the Buckeyes division.  I am assuming that for basketball, there might be a much different look to things.  Which again, is just dumb.

Oh well.  That’s over with.  On with the actual games!!!  GO BUCKS!!!

• Like last year, the Buckeyes will have a different look against the Meatchicken Wolverweenies as Nike melds “throwback” and “future” style in a holiday season cash grab…

One more time, Nike will force some teams into hideous uniforms in big games.  Just check out the model that Virginia Tech will have to don.  But more importantly, THE Ohio State Buckeyes will also wear the Nike ProCombat series uniforms for a big game, in fact, the biggest game, against Meatchicken at seasons end.  Just like last year where the Buckeyes had a “throwback” style uniform that paid homage to the 1954 National Championship winning team, Ohio State will wear yet another uniform in the back to the future style (http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/blog/dr_saturday/post/Nike-s-Pro-Combat-unis-are-awesome-and-or-a-mo?urn=ncaaf-266668).

Of course, I’m not as big a fan of this get-up as I was with last year’s model after getting a look at it.  The motif is in the 1942-retro style number and team colors which includes a red helmet shell but once again gets “Nike-ied” with all sorts of futuristic trim.  But trust me, they’re not as bad as some of the other horrible looking uniforms that will be worn by other Nike schools such as TCU, Miami of Florida and Pitt.  You can see all of them here (http://www.nike.com/nikeos/p/usnikefootball/en_US/).

While I’m not big on the idea or concept of THE Ohio State Buckeyes even messing with tradition and the tried and true awesomeness that is the regular Buckeyes uniform, these aren’t so bad considering some of the other schools involved and the propensity for schools to try different looks from time to time.  The Buckeyes have no need to do such a thing with perhaps one of the best looks in all of college football.  However, if it has to be made, I’m not so horrified by these duds just like last year.  While not a fan of it per-say, the fact is, I must have one.  Yes, I am a slave to Ohio State Buckeyes fashion.

Why do people have to ruin everything?  Sure, sure, the mysterious identity, the highly guarded secret about just exactly who The Stig is, is all part of the fun and finding out something is some kind of coup.  But to be honest, it’s good that the secret is still actually there, the mystery is in place.

But, some publisher in England has sued and gotten the right despite efforts of the BBC to block the story from coming out that the identity of The Stig is just some guy, a former minor league Formula One driver from England (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100901/ap_on_en_tv/eu_britain_top_gear).

So now, the show is a little less…well…fun in a way.  It was the world’s worst and least seriously kept secret and in very British style was kind of back-handed humor, juvenile but not over the top, kitsch if you will.  Unless you know the show and know the Brits, perhaps you wouldn’t be able to understand.  The show, honestly one of the things I miss most about England, is a riot but surely an acquired taste.  I do miss being able to watch the show twice a day in repeats like we do ‘The Simpsons’ here in the states.  It never grows old.  Check it out.  But know now, The Stig is no longer a secret.

Kind of lost in the shuffle during this training camp for the Cincinnati Bungles that has featured the debut of problem children Terrelle Owens and Pac Man Jones and then completely buried by the fact that the Bungles gave Antonio Bryant nearly $8-million bucks to practice with the team ONE time was a tough battle going on at Line Backer.

Lost too was the fact that the Bungles numbers game was probably going to see one of their big names take a significant role reduction or get bounced.  It wound up being Rashad Jeanty, a guy the Bungles pulled off the scrap head a few years back from the CFL and wound up finding a diamond in the rough.

Speaking of rough, Jeanty was just about as tough as they come, hitting hard, playing hurt and being a quiet, up-standing citizen and mentor to the Bungles young bucks on defense.  In particular, Jeanty took up the cause of helping shape Keith Rivers and Rey Maualuga while also being rather productive in 4-seasons with the team.  His reward this training camp while battling injuries and the numbers game?  An early release from the team that was kept rather quiet (http://www.whodeyrevolution.com/whodeyrevolution/2010/08/rashad-jeanty-this-one-actually-hurts.html)

Jeanty was hard as nails and a stand-out on a defense that has truly matured under the tutelage of Mike Zimmer.  Jeanty was a nice stand out performer as a pass rusher and then transitioning back to his more familiar position as a LB after originally being a bit tall for the position and used mostly as a Defensive End.

The team basically just dumped Jeanty though when they cut him the other day.  With few more options to put on the PUP list and no room for him in the LB unit, they cut him.  Perhaps it’s good for Jeanty that it happened early in the pre-season so that he might get picked up by another team.  For his sake and after enjoying watching his play, I sure hope that’s the case.

More, the team dumped a good locker room guy.  A lead by example guy.  A hustle guy.  A guy who played through the pain and a guy who was selfless to his team mates.  So goes the path of the Bungles under Mikey Boy Brown.  It’s all about dollars, even when they throw them away and all about not having any freakin’ clue at what they are doing 95% of the time.
