UNC Tarheels Legend Dean Smith.
-
Rumblings from former players and long time friends at an event to honor Dean Smith worry that perhaps it’s one of the last time they may see the legendary coach…
-
It’s sad in a year that we all lost John Wooden that perhaps Dean Smith may have on-set symptoms of Alzheimer’s.
by Mike Zimmer, Buckeye
According to a repot on Yahoo Sports, a blog has reported that long time friends and ex-players of legendary head coach Dean Smith have said that the coach has lapses in memory and has trouble recognizing them (http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/blog/the_dagger/post/Some-sad-news-on-former-North-Carolina-coach-Dea;_ylt=AkXkoUBzUzmFbI9VrwozHWs5nYcB?urn=ncaab,254281).
It’s very sad considering that we all lost the wonderful human being that is John Wooden, that perhaps Dean Smith may not be with us very much longer. Take the report for what it is worth, the man is old, it could just be a mild case of senility but one way or another how you look at it, it is sad.

When asked if he wanted to coach the Cavs without LeDouche James, Tom Izzo responded “Are you fucking kidding me with that?” He late responded the same way if LeDouche actually did re-sign with the Cavs.
-
Tom Izzo staying put in East Lansing, won’t be taking the Cavs job whether King Douche re-signs or not…
-
LeDouche scaring off all sorts of candidates one way or another, Cavs in no-win situation…what’s new???
-
Sparty is the big winner here as for once something isn’t leaving the state of Michigan for greener pastures.
by Mike Zimmer, Buckeye
Tom Izzo is a smart man. Not only has he just made his legend that much bigger up at Michigan State, he added to the misery of Cleveland too. He should be congratulated for both. Izzo will not be heading to C-town to coach the Cavs…with or without LeDouche James. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/detroitnws/detroitnws_ts2624)
This was like the world’s easiest decision wasn’t it? Why would anyone as big a name and as successful AND highly regarded at Michigan State and in college basketball in general want to leave behind perennial success for the NBA. Let alone basically become either LeDouche James wet nurse OR more than likely the guy to coach the team that no longer has King Douche? Izzo’s legend just got that much more storied for not taking the big cash and chasing the empty dream that is the NBA coaches lable.
Meanwhile, Sparty and all those in Michigan folks are the real winner here. After all, it’s the first thing that hasn’t left Michigan for greener pastures in like…I don’t know…40-years. As for Cleveburg? Well, yet another black eye for that shit hole which we really should give back to that state up north.

Nebraska and Missouri seem to be on their way to the Big T(elev)en rather soon according to reports as the Big XII may be on the verge of collapsing.
-
Nebraska officials including Tom Osborne apparently tired of speculation may announce intentions to flee Big XII and join the Big Ten by Friday…
-
Missou non-committal but would seem not to be very far behind…meanwhile in Colorado a midnight meeting of the board of regents suggests they’re wanting to take their options west while the getting is good…
-
Oh but wait, Congress and those that are left out or on the outside looking in could bitch, whine and moan their way to blocking the road ahead for expansion/re-alignment…
-
Face it, the Big XII is only a name at this point as it looks like it is going to be torn apart.
by Mike Zimmer, Buckeye
According to varied reports, the Nebraska Cornhuskers could be heading to the Big T(elev)en as soon as Friday(http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/06/09/report-nebraska-could-join-big-ten-by-friday/). Apparently officials there have been non-commital towards the Big XII and threats of loyalty etc and that they’ve explored their options in a rather quiet manner. However, it hasn’t kept the powers that be in Lincoln from becoming tired of all the speculation and question over what and where they’ll be.
With this, Missouri who was initially rumored to have had an invite from the Big Ten may not be very far behind. The expansion of the Big T(elev)en by 2 then invites the speculation that a 3rd team might then not be too far behind that to get the conference to 14-teams, two divisions and a conference championship game.
Of course, this is going to tear the Big XII apart. With the dominos starting to fall with Nebraska, the 6-or more teams (Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Colorado) invited by the PAC-10 to head west may jump ship in a hurry.
This then is going to cause a huge stir with the teams on the outside looking in who would no longer have a conference including Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State and Baylor who would all presumably have to jump to lower-end conferences like the Mountain West, Conference USA or WAC. But wait, the politicians are coming to the rescue!!! That’s right, don’t expect this to pass muster until the politicians get paid and/or stick their nose into business that isn’t theirs to poke around in. Read the rest of this entry »

Stock photos of basketball don’t have to suck you know…kind of like that Superman a few articles down.
-
NCAA does the right thing in not totally fucking up the NCAA tourney with crazy expansion of teams in the field…
-
With 3-more teams added, March Madness just adds more “play-in” games…in which the NCAA will want you to call anything but play-in games…
-
Apparently some kind of calm and control prevailed over some school AD’s watering at the mouth over the mounds of cash they could have had by going to the silly 96-team field…
-
Watch out though, this might not be over at 68 and pay-per-view is coming your way in a much larger capacity.
by Mike Zimmer, Yes, this too is late
Another one for the “Late to the party” file: the NCAA will only expand March Madness by 3-more teams and adding more play-in games. (http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/news?slug=ap-ncaatournament)
In a huge re-structure of the TV deal with CBS and now new broadcast partner Turner Sports (TBS and TNT), the NCAA has added 3-teams instead of the ludacris idea of adding up to 32-teams. So, March Madness will have a much more traditional set-up with 68-teams instead of that stupid idea of 96-teams. The deal will now ensure that all games are broadcast live, or so they say at this time between the games being broadcast on CBS, TBS, TNT and CBS’s College Sports Network.
With the extra teams, it would make sense that the lowest possible seeds will be forced to play in the “play-in” game in which the NCAA will try and convince you and force the networks to call anything but a play-in game. In fact, it would only make some sort of sense that Dayton, home of the play-in game since 2001 will be the beneficiary of an additional game pitting your Arkansas Pine-Bluff’s and your Morgan State’s up against other lowly conference teams or accidents that get to the tourney by winning their conference with a losing record. Relentless pursuer, physical rebounder, eagle eye court vision, blazing speed and footwork. You could be confused if you thought a Superhero was being described but you know we’re talking Evan Almighty here. On top of these attributes, he plays well with others and is one damn fine citizen.
Evan Turner may be the finest college basketball player out there, but don’t discount the fact that Turner is this years’ Basketball Nexus. Each new basketball season produces what is called the “Basketball Nexus.” Consider it like a “Vergence in the Force” from the worst Star Wars movie ever. The Basketball Nexus is, again poorly paraphrased, centered around one individual. There are many players who are skilled and raise to the top of their ranks, but there is always one ends up standing out like dog turd on a white Beemer’s hood. Evan Turner is that stinky nugget, er Nexus.
The Nexus does not develop based solely on personal skill of the player it envelopes, though Turner’s is storied. It helps to have a truly gifted player, as that is the primary ingredient but not the only. Other ingredients can include a cohesive starting unit that plays to each other’s strengths, a coach who supports your every decision on the court, and meeting opposing teams at the “right time,” and good old fashioned Chinese Luck (as in “if we don’t have it, we will manufacture it”). Penders cuts down the nets after winning the Conference USA tournement. The longtime coach however has been more or less fired by a new AD.

University of Houston bounces Tom Penders after 5-year re-build job, trip to NCAA tourney…
-
Apparently a new AD and a new Arena needs someone that moves faster than the venerable Penders…

Ahhhhhh, coaching, such a fickle career.
by Mike Zimmer, Penders fan
The University of Houston made their first NCAA tourney appearance since 1992 (or in other words, forever) this past Friday. as the #13 seed, they fought the Maryland Terrepins hard but fell to the #4 seed Terps late. For his trouble, Coach Tom Penders got a choice of being “reassigned”, “fired” or to perhaps resign as the leader of the Cougars today. He chose the latter. http://www.sportsbybrooks.com/tom-penders-out-as-houston-basketball-coach-28076 Read the rest of this entry »

There are many out there in Buckeye Fan Geekdom, myself included, who have bemoaned at times the way Dallas Lauderdale phones in his game. I think Dallas is a talented guy who is showing growth, but being a Buckeye Fan means expecting (quite unrealistically of course) bigger, BETTER, NOW!
It has been nice to see Lauderdale find some dominance during the Big Ten Tournament run as well as Ohio State’s first round game against the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. Lauderdale may have only scored four points, but his 8 (!) blocks and 12 rebounds were dominant. Much as King Kong atop the Empire State, Blocktopus altered the trajectory of every shot let loose within 10 feet of the basket. Against the Gauchos Count Blockula and Jon Diebler were the primary reasons that the Bucks were able to grow a lead despite an off night by Evan Almighty.
Excelsior Dallas Lauderdale!

Woh! Now that’s attrocious!!! And, to be honest, I think it might reference the Jayhawks run to Indianapolis for the this year’s Final Four too. Wow. I mean, does this chick not get that in a matter of days, that thing was to have a shelf life??? How is that going to look in 20-years when she’s trying to find a man to be her 3rd husband??? “Awesome job winning the Big Ten tourney, being one of the hottest teams in the country and ranked in the Top 5. Too bad the NCAA is going to totally fuck us with seeding us their #8 team and in the toughest bracket.”
-
I’ve finally stopped fuming about the Buckeyes basically getting fucked by the NCAA with their seeding in the bracket of death and basically dismissed at their over-all #8 seed…
-
Despite the ridiculous Mid-West bracket, the Buckeyes could still make a title run and pull off a stunning run to the Final Four…
-
Getting an upset or two in their own bracket may not hurt.
by Mike Zimmer, Buckeye
Why do the NCAA bastards hate Ohio State? Seriously, the powers that be fucked the Buckeyes and a handful of other teams by packing them together into one tough MF-er of a bracket and thinning out the crap in the other 3.
Sunday as they announced the brackets, the Mid-West first, it was astonishing to see so many good and talented teams pop out of the bingo machine. Included in that was the Buckeyes being grouped with Kansas, fellow Big Ten team Michigan State, ACC co-champ Maryland, Big East comer Georgetown and SEC Power Tennessee. It was amazing, considering the West and South brackets then were so damn poorly constructed.
Essentially, the NCAA thumbed their nose at the Buckeyes in essence making them their #8 over-all seed and packing them in with perhaps the most competitive group. Former champ Kansas also got some dis-respect considering they should be the #1 over-all, but instead got the toughest road ahead of them if the next few seeds get to the Sweet 16 round.
