Former NHL Enforcer Bob Probert has died, leaves legacy as one of the best heavy weight brawlers in the NHL…
Once part of the ‘Bruise Brothers’ in Detroit and a mainstay in his latter years with Chicago, Probert leaves a legacy of one of the tough guys who had staying power.
by Mike Zimmer, Blue Jackets fan?
The NHL isn’t a place where Enforcers are readily available anymore, not good ones anyways. The game has changed and these guys are mostly just hired goons now days, not real players who can also skate, pass and occasionally score. Bob Probert was part of this latter dying breed.
Probert died yesterday in Ontario while on his boat with his family after what sounds like a heart attack, he was only 45 (http://msn.foxsports.com/nhl/story/nhl-enforcer-bob-probert-dies-070510). Probert who played a long time in the NHL was mostly an enforcer on some teams that weren’t all that good, first in Detroit as one half of the ‘Bruise Brothers’ with Joey Kocur and then with the Chicago Blackhawks. But, the fact that he played as long as he did and for teams that weren’t all that good shows how good a hockey player he was on top of being one of the games premier heavy weights.
In honor of Probert, I present to you some of his best handy work. Watch some good video of hockey fights after the jump. Rest In Peace Mr. Probert. Read the rest of this entry »
Enjoy some of Canada’s finest from Elisha Cuthbert to all sorts of other Canuckian Beaver.
‘O’ Canuckia, we like your sexy broads…from Elisha Cuthebert to Tricia Helfer too…’
On Canada Day, we celebrate the few things that make them great. Like…er…Rush and…Labatt’s Blue…and 150-yard long football fields…
Oh, just enjoy the hot chicks.
by Mike Zimmer, Oh, shut up, I’ll post something for the 4th and the good ol’ USA too
A modern day warrior, mean mean stride, today’s Tom Sawyer, mean mean pride. Yep, it’s Canada Day again. I have to say that I actually like Canada and most Canadians. Geddy Lee, Don Cherry, Jim Carey, Rick Nash, John Candy, Katie West, Elisa Cuthbert, Tricia Helfer, Estella Warren…er…The Kids in the Hall…er…yeah. So what if I’ve named half the country.
Actually, I do miss going up the True North strong and free each summer. The ex-wife and I used to head to Ontario and Quebec each summer for vacation. Quebec City is amongst my favorite places on Earth too, along with Charlevoix and the St. Lawrence River path to the Atlantic. I miss maple pie, poutine, and Unibrue, the Canadian micro-brew that makes some of the best beer on the planet including Maudite, my absolute fav.
So, go ahead, hit the jump and enjoy all things from Canada that are worth while. And don’t forget to tell Mikey B to have a Happy Birfday too!
The Boston Bruins might as well just close up shop and never play again, as they are now associated with the biggest flop in sports history.
Up 3-games to none in a series, up 3-0 in game 7-of said series, Boston manages to barf all over themselves, choke and lose…
Philadelphia amazingly becomes the 4th team all-time to come back from 3-games down in a series to win, do it in game they had no business winning…
Cavs and B’s should really just give up.
by Mike Zimmer, Blue Jackets fan
With the Cavs choking the other night, it’s hard to imagine a bigger personal failure and city that’s been let down than Cleveland. However, Boston got their measure of Karma back when the Boston Bruins managed to pull off one of the most colossal choke jobs and collapses in the history of sport.
With a 3-games to none lead over the #7 seed Philadelphia Flyers, the Bruins had 4-chances at moving on to the Eastern Conference Finals and hosting them. Instead, they managed to lose three straight to the Flyers despite home ice and then barfed up Game 7.
Incredibly, they did it by blowing a 3-0 lead to the Flyers who scored 4-goals including the game-winner in the 3rd in a n0-panic way. Give credit where credit is due, the Flyers are a bunch of grinding, touch bastards. A penalty shot away from not even making the play-offs to begin with, they upset the #2 New Jersey Devils in round one. Then, after all the odds were against them in their series with Boston, they managed to survive and pull off the big shocker. The only thing is, you gotta have a team absolutely implode to get where Philly is, and that’s what Boston did. Read the rest of this entry »
Les Canadien defeated the Penguinies in 7 to move on to the Eastern Conference Finals. Meanwhile in Boston…
The Bruins are falling down versus Le Flyer.
Number 8-seed Montreal defeats Pittsburgh in 7-games to move onto the Eastern Conference Final and a certain Pens fan owes a certain Red Wings fan a shaved head in a bet made in England…
Meanwhile, Le Flyer are still alive and kicking after once again staving off elimination against the B’s and seem like they too could set up a #7 vs. #8 Eastern Conference Finals…
Out West it’s the Blackhawks and Sharks…do you care?
by Mike Zimmer, Winnipeg Jet
My buddy Tim back in England made a drunken bet back in January. The wager: The Pens would win the Stanley Cup in 5-games OR he would shave his head. Uh, Timmy, you now are on notice.
The Pittsburgh Penguins were eliminated from the play-offs tonight, losing in Game 7 on home ice to the Montreal Canadians after allowing 2-quick early goals and never really being in the game with the Habs. That means, the Habs have now defeated the #1 seed and #5 seed on their way to the Eastern Conference Finals which will feature low feature no team with higher than a #6 seed http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/recap;_ylt=ApNMOktAakxhGq8rrte2U385nYcB?gid=2010051216
That #6 seed happens to be the Boston Bruins who after having built a 3-0 lead in their series with the Philadelphia Flyers, have fallen apart and now haven’t scored in something like 134-minutes, in fact, I don’t think the B’s will ever score a goal again at this point. Don’t mess with a man when he’s been watching his team play a 3-OT thriller OK women???
Pennsylvania man apparently kills wife during argument, then burns house down to cover it up…not funny…
Yeah, it’s kind of funny and that’s why I am going to hell.
by Hootie McBoob
When will women learn to keep their pie holes shut? I mean, if your man stays up to watch a hockey game that goes 3-OT’s and his team loses, just keep your opinions to yourself at 2am OK? This could happen to you too.
According to police in Pennsylvania, a man killed his wife after they argued about him staying up to watch a late hockey game (http://www.cbc.ca/canada/ottawa/story/2010/04/23/ottawa-senators-penguins-homicide.html). He then apparently burned his house down to cover the evidence, but authorities say that his wife was killed before the fire started.
Women out there: unless you own a gun and know how to use it, don’t start shit with guys over sports any time after 11pm. OK? This has been a community service provided by this web site and the “This isn’t funny, but then again it kind of is and that is why I am going to hell foundation”.
Henrik Sedin of the Vancouver Cannucks, my pick to perhaps throw a monkey wrench into the Western Conference race to the Stanley Cup.
The NHL play-offs are here…my thoughts on the first round…
Western Conference wide open in my opinion while the East might be order in the first round despite the desparity in points…
I’ll take Vancouver and Pittsburgh even if they are in the middle of what could be a thick fight in each conference.
by Mike Zimmer, Jackets fan
The First Round of the NHL play-offs will start this week and the match-ups are an intriguing lot from top to bottom. The Western Conference, loaded with teams with 100+ points from top to bottom could still be wide open in my opinion while the East with nary a few teams topping out points-wise could be all about the same-old, same-old with top seeds winning out.
While I am no longer an NHL expert (ours has been in hibernation the last couple of seasons) I will do my best not to lead you astray in making my predictions for the 1st round of the NHL play-offs.
First off, my homer hat is on a bit. Since my Blow Jackets didn’t make the play-offs, I revert to the teams I liked before they came along: Pittsburgh and Detroit. They became my Eastern and Western Conference teams after previously having rooted for Vancouver once upon a time. Read the rest of this entry »
IF, this was the end for Mike Modano, it was a pretty special send off. By the Stars, by the fans and then by the man back to the team and fans. Check out the video, pretty cool stuff.
Former Dayton Bombers coach and Tipp City resident Jim Playfair goes ape shit.
The Abbington Heat’s head coach and former Dayton Bombers head man has an issue with the horrible officiating from Don Koharsky’s son…
This is about as good as it gets in coaching melt downs in hockey these days as Playfair is going to have to replace that jackets buttons…
Replacing jacket: $199, two broken sticks: $250, silk tie $55, having an all-time great You Tube moment: priceless.
by Mike Zimmer, former ECHL blogger
Big B and I were enjoying his bunker last week in which he has fashioned 4-TV’s all around his garage. The pickins’ got a little slim at some point last weekend and we wound up having the NHL network on one of the TV’s and they just so happened to be having the IHL’s Toronto Marleys and the Abbington Heat on. Abbington is the minor league affiliate of the Calgary Flames and they have none other than former Dayton Bombers head coach Jim Playfair behind the bench.
Playfair, who is also a former Tipp City resident has made the rounds in hockey in his day. He’s had a cup of coffee all around North America it seems. I don’t remember the guy being overly emotional though when he was behind the bench for the Bombers. Yet, apparently, there is an Incredible Hulk lurking in all of us. At some point, there’s a breaking point, a hot button, a trigger that takes us from hot, to mad, to melt down point.
However now we know. Don’t make Jim Playfair angry. You wouldn’t like him when he’s angry.
Sid the Kid could be part of a bigger plan in thwarting Stealers play in January.
Rumors are heating up that Pittsburgh could be the next host for the NHL’s Winter Classic…
One problem there, if the Squealer were to advance in the play-offs, it may cause a scheduling conflict…
Then again, I expect Ben Rapelisburger and company will be having a first round bye after running rough shod over a poor AFC North next year.
by Mike Zimmer, Falcons/Thrashers fan
How great would it be if the Pittsburgh Penguins made it so the Steelers would have to play else where the first weekend in January? To me, well, it would be just great and some kind of Karma or cosmic justice. After all, the most deserving of the professional franchises in the city, the Pens didn’t get a new arena when both the Squealers and the horrible Pirates got new stadiums in the last decade.
Scuttle butt says that the NHL wants to hold this year’s Winter Classic in Pittsburgh January 1st at Heinz Field. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/03/28/end-of-steelers-2010-season-could-be-affected-by-hockey-plans/ The game, which has become the NHL’s marquee event hosts a game outside in the open winter air instead of an arena on New Year’s Day. Yes, the NHL is that out of tune and that desperate for such an entity to exist by the way.
There’s only one problem with the plan right now though. The Stealers are set to host their home finale on Thursday Dec. 23rd and the preparation for such an event takes about a week and would then take some time to dismantle there after. In recent hosting venues, the ice had remained up for civic uses for a matter of week in each of the cities it was erected. However, if as expected the Stealers make the NFL play-offs this coming season, it would be a logistical and tight timing nightmare, perhaps too much for the NFL’s liking, maybe shipping the Stealers to a road destination due to the scheduling conflict.
